The polychaetes (Annelida, Polychaeta ) of Greece: Checκlist, distribution, and ecological characteristics

Date:

2001 | 111 pages

ISBN:

960-86651-4-0

Abstract:

Monograph deals with the class of the Polychaetous Annelids (Annelida, Polychaeta) in the Greek seas (Greece, Eastern Mediterranean) providing a checklist of the polychaete species recorded in the area and focusing on their distribution and ecology. An introductory chapter outlines the basic external morphological characters of this group, the polychaete life habits and their significance in benthic ecosystems including also a short review of the history of polychaete research in the Mediterranean and a brief biogeographical analysis of the Greek polychaete fauna. Poiychaetes are the most frequent and abundant marine imetazoans in benthic ecosystems with soft sediments. In undisturbed benthic ecosystems studied around Greece, poiychaetes have been found to account for 50-83% in terms of specimens and 40-67% in terms of species. In disturbed to polluted areas poiychaetes increase at the expense of other benthic groups and may totally monopolise the fauna. The first documents available on benthic Polychaeta recorded from Greece date back to 1891. Since then a great ammount of research has been carried out, some of thenn focusing on Polychaete taxonomy. Freshwater Fishes and Lampreys of Greece An Annotated Checklist

Date:

March 2015 | 130 pages

ISBN:

978-960-9798-06-8

Abstract:

This publication provides a complete list of fish species inhabiting freshwaters in Greece as of December 2014. Our initiative aims to produce an official annotated list that will be regularly updated and reviewed by a committee of experts. An annotated species list is critically important for biodiversity conservation, especially since fish names and taxonomic validation have undergone remarkable changes during the last decade. This checklist contains standardized information on species’ taxonomy, distribution, habitat, and conservation status, while it also helps interpret nomenclature and taxonomic problems. Furthermore, it may serve as a scientific basis for developing a wider public interest in Greece’s freshwater fish fauna.

Constructing gendered identities: the rhetorics of gender in the NGO’s volunteers’ talk about sex trafficking

Date:

2015 | 299 pages

ISBN:

978-960-93-7498-9 (pdf)

Abstract:

This study examines the construction of gendered identities in Greek NGO volunteers’ discourse about sex trafficking, from the perspective of critical discursive social psychology and recent feminist post-structuralist theory. More specifically, the key analytical tools of the study’s methodology are the concepts of interpretative repertoires and ideological dilemmas (Potter and Wetherell, 1987, Wetherell, 1998, Billig, Condor, Edwards, Gene, Middleton, and Radley, 1988). The analysis highlights the link between the social construction of gender and sex trafficking. Gender is an object of negotiation in the volunteers’ discourse on sex trafficking and is related to specific ideological positions and dilemmas that emerge from the analysis. The study consists of 32 semi structured interviews with volunteers working for NGOs in Greece. The NGOs were classified in four categories according to their profile. Those categories are:

Thirteenth Century wall paintings in the churches of Rhodes

Scientific Field(s):

Date:

2015 | 326 pages

ISBN:

978-960-93-7473-6

Abstract:

The study focuses on the monumental painting of the island of Rhodes, Greece, during the 13th century and specifically from the year 1204, when the Byzantine official Leo Gabalas took over the administration of the island, until the arrival of the Knights of Saint John in 1309. The remains of the artistic production are located in six churches in the town and the countryside of Rhodes. The monuments in question are presented in chronological order. After the detailed description and iconographic examination follows the stylistic analysis of the murals along with the proposed dating. In particular, the study deals with the frescoes of Saint Phanourios in the Medieval Town of Rhodes, of the monastery of the Archangel Michael at Thari, of Saint John the Theologian at “Koufas” in Paradeissi, of + Saint Nicetas in Damatria, of Saint George Vardas in Apolakkia and of Saint George in Asklepeio. Two sections in the unit on the church of Saint George Vardas were expanded because of their special interest: one concerns the epithet Panagia Akedioktene which accompanies the representation of the Virgin Glykophilousa and the other deals with the iconography and local cult of Saint Philemon, given his representation in the church. Given that the paintings of the church of Saint George Kounaras at Asklepeio is ascribed to the same hand as that of Saint George Vardas, the painter’s style in both monuments and the particularities of his art are
