Abstract:

Greek Scientific Publications 1996-2010: Bibliometric analysis of Greek publications in international scientific journals” is the second edition of EKT’s established study series which records scientific publishing activity in Greece and its international impact. The study series –a result of collaborative work– aims to create a consistent ground for monitoring and presenting data for the research environment in Greece and thus to enable correlations with levels of research activity in EU and OECD countries. Our goal is to provide reliable evidence on the Greek research area, point to its strengths and contribute to a broader understanding of the potentials and challenges of Reseach and Development (R&D) in Greece. Greek Scientific Publications 1996-2010: Bibliometric analysis of Greek publications in international scientific journals” is the second edition of EKT’s established study series which records scientific publishing activity in Greece and its international impact.

Abstract:

"Greek Scientific Publications 1993 – 2008: A bibliometric analysis of Greek publications in international scientific journals" is a study by the National Documentation Centre (EKT) aimed at identifying the basic characteristics of the Greek scientific output between 1993-2008 and exploring Greece’s position in the international scientific landscape. The study applied a bibliometric analysis of Greek scientific publications appearing in international journals between 1993-2008. Data for Greek scientific publications in international journals was analyzed systematically for bibliometric indicators such as the number and (%) share of publications, the percent of cited papers, the number and (%) share of citations, the relative citation impact, the field normalised citation score (citation score) and the number and pencentile breakdown of top publications belonging to the most cited publications in the world (1%, 5%, 10%, 25% and 50%). Detailed information on the bibliometric indicators examined in the study is given in Annex I.

State of Hellenic Fisheries

Date:

2007 | 467 pages

ISBN:

978-960-98054-1-4

Abstract:

Μarine capture fisheries are of vital importance to the economic development of Hellas since it contributes to the maintenance of the social and economic coherence of the coastal and insular areas offering security of labour to a large number of persons particularly in remote islands, and it provides animal proteins of high biological value through the sustainable exploitation of the resources. The present textbook aims to familiarize the reader with the organization and problems of the Hellenic fisheries. In fact, although there is a sizeable amount of information and references on various scientific and technical issues, these were scattered and fragmented, while this textbook constitutes a consolidated work including all different aspects, and hence it is trusted to become a useful tool for every scientist and administrator in marine fisheries. The different chapters offer valuable information derived either from the literature or the results of research and development projects conducted by scientists in Hellenic waters and therefore, a good part of the information included herein originates from sources that are not readily available to an ordinary reader. In a number of papers included in this textbook, date analysis and geographical presentations was made using the application and the models developed in the frame of the research project “Development of an Intergrated Management System” to support the sustainability of

The Phylum Sipuncula in the Mediterranean Sea

Scientific Field(s):

Date:

1999 | 93 pages

ISBN:

960-85952-7-4

Abstract:

The sipunculan diversity in the Mediterranean has been up to now scarce and inaccurate. This monograph is an effort to compile existing information on the Mediterranean species recorded so far, reviewing the nomenclature used. Full synonymy, description with emphasis on distinguishing features, distribution in the Mediterranean and worldwide and ecology are given for each species. A dichotomic key is included along with illustrations for each species pinpointing the distinctive characteristics in order to facilitate the student/researcher in identifying a species. The produced check list of Mediterranean Sipuncula is presented in taxonomic order according to the classification scheme of GIBBS and CUTLER (1987). This work showed that the phylum is represented in the Mediterranean by 33 species, belonging to five families and nine genera whereas only 22 species were reported to occur in the prexisting literature. Higher species diversity (29 species: 88%) is recorded in the Western basin, whereas in the eastern basin diversity is reduced to 21 species (64%). Worth noticing is the absence of endemic Sipuncula in the Mediterranean. The present work extends the known bathymétrie distribution of the species in 9 cases. This result shows the richness of the Sipuncula in the Mediterranean refering to the world scale: 33 species out of a total of 162 world species, that is 20% are presented in the Mediterranean. The majority of them (39%) has a wide

State of the Hellenic Marine Environment

Date:

2005 | 360 pages

ISBN:

960-86651-8-3

Abstract:

This report provides a general assessment of the Hellenic Seas. It was envisaged as a collection of information, providing background comprehensive facts for the broader scientific community and European citizens. This is the first report of its kind, regarding the Hellenic marine and coastal waters. It is an initiative of the Institute of Oceanography of the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR). Research Institutes and Universities across Hellas have joined forces to produce this report. The efforts to coordinate and compile the work, by different institutions, gave very encouraging results The literature review on all issues examined for the Hellenic Seas with links to climate changes, biodiversity, sustainable development, socio-economic aspects was undertaken using electronic databases and all available sources. All forms of literature were exploited (the most recent information, historical data and the grey literature) and are included in the reference sections at the end of each chapter. In addition, abstracts from conferences have been used where no other relative information was available.

Τα Κητώδη των Ελληνικών θαλασσών

Scientific Field(s):

Date:

2003 | 162 pages

ISBN:

960-86651-7-5

Abstract:

The oligotrophic eastern Mediterranean Sea has always been considered poor regarding its cetacean fauna. Until recently, very little was known concerning the cetaceans that inhabit its northeastern part, i.e. the Greek Seas: east Ionian, Aegean, north and south Cretan Seas. This work reveals that the Greek Seas present an unexpectedly high diversity in cetacean species and discusses preliminary information regarding their distribution and relative abundance. During the last ten years (1991-2001), data from dedicated surveys, strandings, opportunistic sightings, and published or unpublished photographic and video documents have been systematically gathered in a database. Sightings from an older published work regarding the cetaceans of the Aegean Sea, as well as all confirmed sightings and strandings that are found in the literature, have been also included in the database accounting for 618 sightings and 709 stranded cetaceans (in 668 stranding events). From 1991 to 2001, dedicated surveys up to three months long have been organized every year in the summer and autumn. Surveys covered the north and south Ionian Sea, the sea area off south-west Crete, the Corinthian Gulf and in a lesser degree the

Καθορισμός Προδιαγραφών Συστήματος Παρακολούθησης Αλιευτικών Αποθεμάτων

Date:

2002 | 46 pages

ISBN:

960-86651-5-9

Abstract:

The first chapter describes the general principles that should characterize and describe a system for the monitoring of fisheries resources, the detailed directions for the collection of the suitable statistical information, the required samplings and reviews that should be organized on the basis of those principles, the problems of multispecies fishery - which are particularly complex in the Mediterranean, the rationale for selecting suitable sampling design, the major sources of sampling biases and how they could be possibly reduced and, finally, the implementation of geographic unit in fisheries management and the advantages of its use in the Mediterranean. The second chapter describes the existing fisheries statistics and databases in the country, such as the National Statistical Service of Greece, the Fishery Development Corporation, the Agricultural Bank of Greece, as well as other data sources coinciding mainly with the research institutes of the country and gathered in the recent years within the frame of various, mainly EU, research projects. The third chapter describes the routines of fisheries data collections that are applied in our country now days or will be applied in the future in accordance to the existing EU regulations (2847/93/12.10.93, 2846/98/17.12.98 and 1543/00/29.06.00).
